About

FDI World Dental Federation serves as the principal representative body for more than one million dentists worldwide, developing health policy and continuing education programmes, speaking as a unified voice for dentistry in international advocacy and supporting member associations in global oral health promotion activities. Over the years, it has developed programmes, initiative, campaigns, policies and congresses, always with a view to occupying a space that no other not-for-profit group can claim.

FDI membership comprises some 200 member national dental associations in over 130 countries. It works at national and international level through its own activities and those of its member dental associations. It is in official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) and is a member of the World Health Professions Alliance WHPA.

FDI was founded in Paris in 1900. Today, its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland.

  • <p><strong>INDIAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION to Host the 2022 FDI WORLD DENTAL CONGRESS in Mumbai<br>Coinciding with 75 years CELEBRATION of its establishment</strong><br><br>The Indian Dental Association has been given the privilege to host the FDI World Dental Congress 2022, in Mumbai India. The Congress scheduled from the 29th September - 2nd October 2022, will offer dentists and those in the dental industry from around the world an outstanding contact platform to exchange experiences and opinions, acquire leading dental technologies and products along with an opportunity to attend a cutting edge scientific program.<br><br>The past FDI WDC hosted by the Indian Dental Association in New Delhi in 2004 and September 2014 has greatly contributed to uplifting the profession in the country and global oral health. The 2014 edition has been a grand success judged by all parameters – delegate participation over 20000 from 121 countries, exceeding all expectations of the past.<br><br>Since then, IDA has been making effective contributions to the deliberations of FDI in its efforts to improve global oral health consistent with FDI’s goal, with active participation in FDI lead projects such as ‘World Oral Health Day’, ‘Oral Health Observatory’, to mention a few.<br><br>The theme of the 2022 FDI WDC, “REBUILD AND REUNITE DENTISTRY IN THE CITY OF DREAMS”, was aptly developed keeping in mind the current situation with an intention of overcoming it together as a profession.<br><br>Additionally, IDA will be completing 75 glorious years of its service to the community and will be celebrating the Diamond Jubilee in the year 2022.   • <p></p><p><i></i></p>It is my great pleasure to invite you to the FDI World Dental Congress (WDC)in Buenos Aires from 5-8 September 2018. The WDC is back in Buenos Aires after 30 years and we are very excited to meet with colleagues from all over the world to witness the pinnacle of oral health.<br><br>FDI and the Confederación Odontológica de la República Argentina (CORA)are working on an on point scientific programme, where you will find many lectures to suit your needs and will have the chance to listen to world-renowned speakers in English and Spanish.<br><br>The WDC will be held at the La Rural Congress Centre. La Rural has been a cultural landmark for Buenos Aires and Argentina for many years because it is the centre of the <u>Rural Show</u>, a very well-known cultural event that takes place every August.<br><br>Argentina is home to many magnificent travel locations and we believe many colleagues will extend their stay to explore our lovely country.   • <p></p><p><i></i></p>In 2017, FDI returns to Spain to hold its World Dental Congress (WDC). It is an exciting prospect to be hosted by a founder member and enthusiastic and active supporter of FDI: the Spanish Dental Association (Consejo General de Colegios Odontólogos y Estomatólogos de España). <br><br>Madrid has already played host to three WDC, including one of the earliest Annual Sessions1 in 1903, on the invitation of Dr Florestan Aguilar of Spain. He was an FDI founding father, former President and Secretary-General, and towering presence for over 30 years in our federation’s early work. <br><br>Madrid is also an exciting prospect for exhibitors to display their equipment, products and services in a mature and growing oral health market. According to 2016 statistics by Eurostat, of the just-under 330,000 practising dentists in Europe, nearly one-tenth are in Spain (32,429), making it the continent’s fourth largest dental market. Annual sales of dental equipment are well in excess of EUR 65 million, while growth in the dental market is estimated at 2% per year. <br><br>FDI’s World Dental Congress is one of the world’s oldest international events under the name of one of the world’s oldest medical-sector organizations. It is the ‘must-attend’ international meeting point for sharing policy, information and ideas on dentistry and oral health. It is also a highly reputable source of continuing education allowing dentists and other oral health practitioners to stay abreast of the latest technology and practices. It regularly offering courses by speakers from over 30 countries. Other congress features include the World Oral Health Forum, which provides an opportunity to debate hot topics in oral health and related issues. <br><br>The World Dental Exhibition has been an integral part of the WDC ever since 1929, when an Oral Health Exhibition first took place in association with the 23rd FDI Annual Session in Utrecht (Netherlands). The dental profession and the dental industry are essential partners in delivering oral health to populations around the world. Their symbiotic relationship is even more important today as new materials and technology are developed rapidly to accommodate the latest treatment philosophies. <br><br>The renowned IFEMA Feria de Madrid is a prime event venue and clear benchmark in the international show and conference sector. With some 500 events organized annually, it plays a vital role in the local and national economy as a key vector for promoting Madrid, hence Spain. <br><br>The city of Madrid, the capital of Spain, with a population of just over 3 million, is one of the world’s leading conference and tourism destinations.   • <p></p><p><strong></strong></p><p><strong>The FDI Annual World Dental Congress is unique in the opportunities it provides for learning and debate with dental col leagues from around the world.</strong></p><p>The FDI Annual World Dental Congress is, in fact, two interconnected but distinct events: on the one hand, there is an international congress with a first-rate scientific programme deliv­ered by top international, regional and national speakers. FDI is proud to bring together in one place some of the recognized ‘heavyweights’ of the international dental community, all of them specialists in key areas of modern dentistry. We are also very proud of some of the new sessions, first introduced in 2012. They include ‘meet the expert’ sessions, a true innovation, where partic­ipants have the opportunity of interacting with major figures in international dentistry. A recent innovation has been the World Oral Health Fo­rum, usually in two separate sessions, which fo­cuses on areas on public policy and oral health. The aim is to widen the debate, with speakers from other health or policy sectors.</p><p>On the other hand, the FDI congress is the once-yearly get-together of the World Dental Parliament, a decades-long part of FDI. It is a mixture of formal and informal sessions: central is the General Assembly, our federation’s su­preme legislative and governing body, where the project leaders from among FDI membership report on progress over the past twelve months in key areas where FDI and its partners are in­crementally moving towards FDI’s ultimate goal of ‘Leading the World to Optimal Oral Health’. This is supplemented by the three Open Forums, where policy debate takes place in as less formal atmosphere.</p><p>Poland is an excellent choice because, with a resilient economy, demand for dental services is growing rapidly, with growth in the private dental sector estimated between 20 and 30% per year. So it makes sense to hold an international event there at this time.</p><p>Geographically, Poland is at a cross roads and we believe ideally placed to attract participants from throughout Europe. We also believe that it has the potential to attract participants from around the world. In addition, we know that we have a top quality local team so we really expect a large turn­out for the FDI Annual World Dental Congress in Poznan and count on it being the landmark inter­national event in dentistry in 2016.</p><p><strong>Dr Patrick Hescot</strong></p><p><strong>FDI President</strong></p><br><p></p>
