About

The Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry is a dental charity dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in pain and anxiety control for dentistry.

Often referred to as SAAD (pronounced to rhyme with ‘card’), the society has developed from a small study club in the late 1950s into one of the UK’s largest postgraduate teaching organisations for dentistry.

The society’s main function is providing postgraduate education by running courses encouraging the safe provision of conscious sedation for dentistry.

A major provision is also made for the training of dental nurses assisting in the procedures for conscious sedation and the management of associated complications.

 •
This course is designed to provide dental nurses with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to assist an operator-sedationist during the provision of dental treatment under conscious sedation. This is a standalone course that can be attended by experienced sedation nurses as a refresher, or by 'new starters' as part of the SAAD Assessed Sedation Nurse scheme.

 •

This is a two-day course.

The curriculum is based on the Dental Sedation Teachers’ Group Publication “Training in Conscious Sedation for Dentistry” and the GDC’s “Developing the Dental Team”. The course will provide revision of the relevant biomedical science covered in the latter publication and teaching in the shortfall between the two documents. The didactic and practical teaching on this course should be complemented by supervised clinical practice leading to competency for independent practice. This would normally be achieved after 10 supervised administrations of inhalation sedation, which must be organised in the participants own workplace. SAAD cannot organise supervised clinical practice.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF HYGIENIST / THERAPIST TEACHING IN CONSCIOUS SEDATION

Aim

To provide the Hygienist / Therapist with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the competent practice of inhalation conscious sedation for dentistry.

Objectives

To provide core knowledge relevant to the practice of inhalation conscious sedation in dentistry.

To promote a critical and caring approach to the management of anxious patients.

To promote an understanding of inhalation sedation in the management of pain and anxiety communication skills in the management of patients requiring conscious sedation.

To appreciate the importance of continuing professional education.
